According to Margot Robbie, portraying Nellie, a hopeful actress in the silent film industry in Damien Chazelle’s film Babylon, is the accomplishment she feels most proud of.
At the age of 32, Margot Robbie has already had a significant impact on Hollywood. The former Neighbours star from Australia has received nominations for two Oscars and four BAFTAs, worked with some of the biggest names in the industry, and produced notable works like Promising Young Woman. However, she believes that her most recent film, Babylon, is the one she is proudest of. The three-hour epic by Damien Chazelle focuses on the silent era of Hollywood, with Diego Calva playing an aspiring film star and Robbie portraying Nellie, who takes him under her wing. The film marks another collaboration between Chazelle and Justin Hurwitz, who composed the music for Whiplash, La La Land, and First Man.
Robbie shared in a new behind-the-scenes featurette that Nellie’s character is one she feels closest to. As the story progresses, Nellie realizes that Hollywood is much more challenging and chaotic than she ever anticipated, but she won’t let anyone stand in her way. Robbie expressed that Babylon will be the achievement she is most proud of in both her career and life.
Robbie first gained attention for her portrayal of an American character in the TV series Pan Am alongside Christina Ricci in 2011-2012. Since then, she has made an impact in Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street and notably as Harley Quinn. Her role as controversial ice skater Tonya Harding in I, Tonya earned her a nomination for Best Actress at the Oscars.
Babylon also features Brad Pitt, Jean Smart, Tobey Maguire, Lukas Haas, Max Minghella, Olivia Wilde, Katherine Waterston, and Samara Weaving, who bears a striking resemblance to Robbie. The film will be released in the US and Canada on December 23, 2022, and in the UK on January 20, 2023. While waiting for another Chazelle extravaganza, check out our guide to the best musicals.
